Each new project is, for me, an opportunity to play with color and rejoice in the interesting results.
If there are indeed two types of weavers, the color/pattern types and the structure/technique types, I fall into the former category. Many of my friends and acquaintances and even my husband were met at guilds, classes, conferences, art and craft shows and living history events.
My life story is built around inkle weaving. Yet, there are still numerous things I have not done and I estimate that further explorations will occupy me for all the rest of my years. From the list of things to make with a band, I have created many. Of the above mentioned techniques, I have tried many. (I’m sorry I haven’t kept an accurate accounting.) Although I’ve tried other types of weaving, it is the inkle loom which holds my heart. In over three decades since I began weaving on inkle looms, I’ve produced miles of woven bands. One of the most common questions I hear is “Can you join them together to make wider items?” Why not?! This makes the uses for an inkle band truly endless. What can you do with a woven band? We can take inspiration from many of these to create items that we can cherish for our own use or give as gifts. Honestly, as nice as the weaving is, when I compare this to the Shetland wool weaving – I really do not think that I will end up using this trim for my Viking costume. The seller was also having a ″buy two get one free″ offer, so I also received: From KramValgerdįrom Indiana, USA, this arrived on August 14. I ordered all 3 packages on August 6, 2014. I also wanted trim for a belt, and wanted 83″/210cm and I wanted that to be 1-1.5″ wide, with 2″ wide being ok. Looking at what I’d need, I wanted trim for the top of my apron dresses – 55″/140cm that was preferably about 1″ wide. I ended up going to Etsy and found three different options – none were exactly what I wanted, but I figured that at least it would give me an idea of what I might want, and what might be available. She indicated that although there are artifacts indicating that tablet weaving is authentic to the Viking Age, that Inkle Weaving is likely authentic as well, and is quite a bit easier to do (and thus probably cheaper too!). After chatting with a woman from the SCA who has also studied Viking Age costume, I figured that instead of waiting to eventually learn how to do tablet or Inkle Weaving myself… that I should purchase some ready-made trim for my costume – or at least in the meantime!
